Maria Grazia è umbra ma vive a Bologna, sua città di adozione. Ama gli anni Cinquanta e si ispira ai dadaisti e ai futuristi.
Maria Grazia è un’artista del collage. Taglia, riassembla ed incolla immagini e parole, presi da vecchie riviste, per creare opere uniche e contemporanee. Reinterpreta così i messaggi tipici degli anni Cinquanta in chiave attuale.
Cos’è Collage Vintage?
Collage Vintage è un piccolo sogno nato per gioco: ritagliare immagini e frasi da vecchie riviste, facendole diventare una rappresentazione della modernità e di valori universali: l’ottimismo, la voglia di vivere, di sorridere, di prendere la vita con allegria, sapendone cogliere la bellezza e l’eleganza. I collage sono composizioni su carta, ottenuti assemblando immagini, frasi, loghi ed elementi grafici tutti provenienti da riviste anni ’50. Sono composizioni che vogliono riportare nell’oggi un concetto di bellezza e di armonia del passato.
Com’è nata la tua passione per i collage?
La tecnica del collage mi è sempre piaciuta: ho sempre ammirato gli artisti dada, i futuristi, e soprattutto Mimmo Rotella ed i suoi Décollage, che amo molto. Ma oltre ad ammirarli nei musei, non pensavo di diventarne io un’interprete. Ho fatto studi classici, mi sono specializzata in lingue e lavoro da 15 anni in un’azienda che amo molto, nel settore comunicazione. Non ho pertanto una formazione artistica. Il mio primo Collage è nato per caso ritagliando una vecchia rivista di mia mamma: mi piaceva l’immagine di una vecchia bottiglia, ne volevo fare un quadretto per la mia cucina. Ma invece di ritagliare tutta la pubblicità, ho cominciato a scomporre e ricomporre i singoli elementi. Da quel giorno non mi sono più fermata.
Perchè ami così tanto gli anni Cinquanta?
Li amo per varie ragioni, sia di forma che di contenuto: a quell’epoca la moda era veramente bellissima, con una spiccata tendenza all’armonia, alla perfezione, all’attenzione per ogni dettaglio: abito, scarpa, cappello, guanti: tutto concorreva a dare eleganza. La donna era femminile alla massima potenza. Ma oltre a questo, gli anni 50 hanno una grande potenza: quella del sorriso e della voglia di vivere. Penso che il fatto di essere sopravvissuti alla guerra desse alle persone una grande consapevolezza del valore della propria vita. Dalle immagini traspare infatti una voglia prepotente di guardare al futuro, di saperlo e poterlo creare lì seduta stante. E’ evidente una grande spinta energica verso il domani che era tutto da costruire, ed è questo che mi affascina. Inoltre nei giornali si usava ancora molto il disegno al posto della fotografia: ho imparato a conoscere e riconoscere la mano di grandi maestri del disegno che animavano le riviste: uno su tutti, l’italiano René Gruau che per me è diventato un vero mito. Le scritte erano belle, i colori delle pagine delicati. Dagli anni sessanta in poi questa armonia secondo me si spezza, e questo stringe il mio orizzonte temporale tra il 1951/2 ed il 1960/62. E’ in questo decennio che mi concentro, è lì che i miei occhi si fermano perché è il periodo per me più bello in assoluto.
5 pezzi vintage nel tuo armadio
Nella vita normale io non vesto molto vintage. Sono una donna del mio tempo, mi piace vivere nell’oggi, guardo anche io al futuro. Ciononostante ho una predilezione per i tubini neri, per le scollature alla Audrey Hepburn, per i cappelli. Adoro il mio cappellino bianco e nero che indosso nelle occasioni importanti, e che è opera di una grande artista sarda che vive e lavora a Londra: Retro Maki. Lei lo ha fatto con vecchi tessuti d’epoca e un pettinino anni 20, ed è il pezzo vintage che amo di più.
Cosa collezioni?
Molte cose! Ho una passione per i bicchieri con scritte pubblicitarie bianche: Cinzano, Campari, Carpano, Aperol, Select. Quando apparecchio la tavola li mescolo tutti. Adoro le vecchie scatole in latta e cartone con le scritte ed i vecchi marchi, e poi le vecchie confezioni delle mercerie di una volta: compro rocchetti di filo, matassine, ma anche vecchi quaderni di scuola, carte e mappe geografiche, guide del Touring club anni Cinquanta.
Cosa cerchi quando vai ai mercatini?
Principalmente giornali e riviste che uso per i collage, ma in generale tutti i vecchi oggetti dove compaiono delle vecchie scritte pubblicitarie. Ed ultimamente vecchie cornici, che recupero ed adatto per incorniciare personalmente i collage. Amo molto anche questo aspetto: trovare belle cornici dentro cui le mie donne verranno ammirate. Cornici imperfette, segnate dal tempo, e che spesso custodiscono al loro interno delle storie: vecchie foto che rivelano delle dediche, strati di memoria che tornano alla luce.
Vecchio film preferito
Poveri ma belli di Dino Risi. Il film dentro cui vorrei essere da protagonista. E poi Caccia al ladro, con Cary Grant e Grace Kelly. In generale i film in cui è protagonista Cary Grant, il mio simbolo maschile preferito.
Di quali abitudini passate o forse perse senti di più la nostalgia?
Pensando allo stile ed all’estetica, l’abitudine di indossare i cappelli. Li trovo adorabili. Se ti capita di sfogliare due riviste di moda, una degli anni 50 ed una degli anni 60, la differenza fondamentale che salta all’occhio è proprio il cappello. Quando scompare quello, si perde una gran parte della bellezza della figura. A parte la moda, …fare dei viaggi partendo in macchina, anziché in aereo, tenendo d’occhio una mappa di carta, anziché un navigatore satellitare. Magari perdendosi e poter fare così delle fantastiche scoperte occasionali. Scrivere appunti con la penna su un taccuino. Ma questa abitudine per fortuna non l’ho persa e non la perderò mai.
Il tuo sogno di felicità
Vivere in armonia con l’universo, e con il mio tempo. Avere il privilegio di coltivare una mia passione, creare bellezza, creare qualcosa che, essendo apprezzato dalle persone, mi sopravviverà. Sono felice ogni volta che strappo un sorriso a qualcuno con i miei collage, ogni volta che un mio lavoro cambia per un attimo l’umore delle persone. Alcune volte i miei clienti mi dicono che i collage che sono appesi in camera, o in bagno, sono le prime cose che guardano al mattino, e che la frase che c’è scritta dà loro lo sprint utile ad iniziare bene la giornata.

Faccio fatica a sceglierne solo 5, Bologna è una bellissima città dove ho scelto di vivere anche non sono nata qui, ma a Spoleto, in Umbria.

1. Fare la spesa al Mercato delle Erbe di via Ugo Bassi, mangiando pesce fresco cucinato direttamente ai banchi del mercato.
2. Andare a vedere un film al Cinema Lumière
3. Perdersi per le vie del ghetto, ammirando le vecchie botteghe che ancora conservano intatto il loro fascino.
4. Passare il pomeriggio ad annusare e scegliere tè e tisane da Stregate di via Porta Nova
5. Curiosare tra i banchi del Mercato Antiquario di Piazza Santo Stefano, la piazza più bella della città.

What is Collage Vintage?
Collage Vintage is a little dream that was created just for fun: cropping images and phrases from old magazines to turn them into a representation of modernity and universal values; optimism, the will to live, to smile, to take life with joy, knowing how to grasp its beauty and elegance. The collages are compositions on paper, obtained by assembling images, phrases, logos and graphics all from magazines from the 50s. They are compositions that want to bring the past’s concept of beauty and harmony to today’s world.
Where did your passion for collage come from?
I have always liked the collage technique: I’ve always admired dada artists, futurists, and especially Mimmo Rotella and his Décollages, which I really love. But on top of admiring them in museums, I would have never thought of becoming an interpreter (of the technique). I have a classical studies background, I specialized in languages and for 15 years I have been working in a company I love very much, in the field of communication. Therefore I do not have an artistic training. My first collage was created by chance by cutting one of my mum’s old magazines: I liked the image of an old bottle and wanted to frame it for my kitchen. But instead of cutting the whole advertisement, I began disassembling and reassembling its single elements. I haven’t been able to stop ever since.
Why do you love so much the 50s?
I love them for various reasons, both linked to form and content: fashion at that time was really beautiful, with a marked tendency to harmony, to perfection, and attention to every detail: the dress, the shoes, the hat, the gloves: all competed to achieve elegance. The woman was a female to the nth degree. Beyond that, the 50s have a great power: that of the smile and the will to live. I think that surviving the war gave people greater awareness of the value of their lives. From pictures of the time you can see a compelling will to look ahead, to know the future and be able to create it there, immediately. An energetic push towards rebuilding for tomorrow was always clear and that’s what fascinates me. In newspapers, they used drawings instead of photography: I have come to know and recognize the style of great masters that animated magazines: among them all, the Italian René Gruau has become a legend for me. The writings were beautiful, the colors of the pages were delicate.
In my opinion, from the sixties onwards, this harmony breaks, and this is why my timeframe ranges between 1951-52 and 1960-62. I focus on this decade; it is there that my eyes stop because it is the most beautiful time ever.
Tell us about 5 vintage pieces in your closet.
In everyday life, I do not wear vintage clothes. I am a woman of my time, I like to live in the ‘here’ and ‘now’ and I also look at the future. Nevertheless I have a fondness for black tube dresses, for Audrey Hepburn’s necklines, for hats.
I love my little black and white hat that I wear on important occasions, and that is the work of a great Sardinian artist who lives and works in London: Retro Maki. She did it with old vintage fabrics and a 1920’s comb. It is the vintage piece that I love the most.
What do you collect?
Many things! I have a passion for glasses with white advertising signs: Cinzano, Campari, Carpano, Aperol, Select. When I set the table, I mix them all. I love old tin and cardboard boxes with words and old brands, and then old haberdasheries packaging: I buy spools of thread, skeins, but also old school notebooks, papers and maps, the Touring Club guides from the fifties.
What do you look for when you go to flea markets?
I especially look for newspapers and magazines that I use for collages, but in general all old objects with old advertising signs. And recently, I look for old frames, that I recover and I convert to frame my collages. I also love this part very much: finding beautiful frames within which my women will be admired. Imperfect frames, marked by time, and which often preserve their story: old photos that reveal dedications, layers of memory returning to life.
What’s your favorite old movie?
Poveri ma belli directed by Dino Risi. I wish I was the main character of this movie. And then To catch a Thief, with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. In general, all the movies in which the main character is Cary Grant, my favorite male symbol.
What past or maybe lost habits do you feel most nostalgic about?
With reference to style and aesthetics, the habit of wearing hats. I find them adorable. If you happen to browse two fashion magazines, one of the 50s and one of the 60s, the fundamental difference you notice is the hat. When it disappears, you lose a large part of the beauty of the figure. Besides fashion, … travelling by car, instead of by plane, keeping an eye on a paper map, rather than on a navigation system. Maybe getting lost and being able to make some occasional amazing discoveries.
Writing notes with a pen on a notebook. Fortunately, I have not lost this habit and I never will.
What is your dream of happiness?
Living in harmony with the universe, and with my time. Having the privilege of cultivating a passion of mine, creating beauty, creating something that, being appreciated by other people, will survive me. I’m happy every time I manage to get a smile out of someone with my collages, and whenever my job changes the mood of people for a moment. Sometimes my clients tell me that the collages that are hung in their bedroom, or bathroom, are the first things they look at in the morning, and that the sentence written on them gives them the necessary push to start the day.

I find it hard to pick only five things, Bologna is a beautiful city where I chose to live because I was not born here. I was born in Spoleto, Umbria.

1. Shopping at Mercato delle Erbe in Via Ugo Bassi, eating fresh fish cooked directly in the market stalls.
2. Go watch a movie at Cinema Lumière
3. Get lost in the streets of the ghetto, admiring the old shops which still retain their charm.
4. Spend the afternoon smelling and choosing tea and herbal teas from Stregate in Via Porta Nova
5. Browse through the stalls of Mercato Antiquario in Piazza Santo Stefano, the most beautiful square of the city.
