Anatomie de “Sine Modus”

Sine Modus nasce nel 2012 dall’amicizia tra Chiara e Manuela, e dalla loro passione per il vintage. Lo scorso ottobre Sine Modus ovvero Chiara e Manuela hanno aperto il loro store Sine Modus Milano in via Pomponazzi 22.

I turbanti Sine Modus sono realizzati a mano, con stoffe che deriviamo da capi vintage o second-hand scelti con cura e tanta selezione per avere così tessuti esclusivi: gonne, camicie, abiti vengono smontati per essere rielaborati nella forma di questi splendidi copricapi.

Il turbante è un accessorio sofisticato ed elegante che ricorda le dive hollywoodiane degli anni 70 e che resta un pezzo immancabile nel guardaroba di ogni donna.

Com’è nata la vostra passione per la moda vintage?
La nostra passione si può dire risalga alla nostra infanzia, quando entrambe andavamo ai mercatini dell’usato, molto frequenti giù da noi in Campania, dove puoi trovare dei capi meravigliosi, delle vere chicche, dei tesori di tessuto, semplicemente rovistando un po’ nel mucchio di “panni” che gli ambulanti vendono a poco. Fra le “pezze americane” (così le chiamano al sud) è nato tutto. Poi chiaramente ci siamo documentate, abbiamo approfondito l’argomento e allora è subentrata una maggiore ricerca, in negozi specializzati, spesso anche a Londra.

Che cosa vi ispira?
Ci ispira unicità, esclusività, eleganza, personalità.

Come si indossa il turbante?
Non c’è una regola per indossare un turbante, va bene sempre, in qualsiasi momento della giornata, con qualsiasi stile, è un accessorio da portare con disinvoltura, solo così ti “vestirà”, regalandoti quel tocco in più, che fa la differenza.

Dove trovate i tessuti per realizzare i vostri turbanti?
I nostri turbanti vengono realizzati a mano da noi, nel nostro laboratorio qui a Milano e impieghiamo tessuti che ricaviamo da capi vintage. Molto spesso succede che vecchie gonne, vestiti, camicie presentino tessuti e fantasie meravigliose, ma magari qui o lì un po’ rovinati o obsoleti nello stile, da qui la scelta di ridare loro nuova vita.

Manuela sicuramente cappelli, io gioielli.

l tubino in macramè, un montone, un Borsalino, un gioiello, un trench di Burberry.

Di quali abitudini passate e forse perse sentite di più la nostalgia?
Io ho nostalgia del risveglio nella mia casa d’origine, a Paestum, dove ancora abitano i miei genitori, svegliarsi lì significa fare colazione con loro e poi andare a fare una passeggiata al mare, gesti semplici, ma che riempiono il cuore. Manu: “il pranzo domenicale dalla nonna materna.

Come nasce l’idea di un negozio a Milano?
E’ stata la naturale evoluzione del nostro lavoro, portato avanti negli ultimi due anni sui social e con il nostro sito internet. Avevamo bisogno di un laboratorio e di un luogo fisico dove poter interagire personalmente con le clienti, poiché lo scambio, di pareri e valori, dal vivo dà un valore aggiunto al nostro lavoro.

L’angolo preferito del vostro negozio
Più che un angolo è una parete, realizzata in modo che sembrasse antica e sulla quale abbiamo voluto due specchi barocchi. E’ evocativa e calda.

Il vostro sogno di felicità
Che questo lavoro si evolva ancora, per poter comunicare attraverso quello che sarà un vero e proprio concept la nostra passione per l’arte, la letteratura, il design oltre che per la moda.

5 cose da fare a Milano
Fare un salto in Corso Como, presso la Galleria Sozzani (dove ci sono sempre delle bellissime mostre di fotografia), andare allo spazio Oberdan, per le rassegne di Cinema d’epoca, mangiare Sushi al Temakinho, andare a ballare al Tunnel al sabato per la serata Le Cannibale, passeggiare nei giardini Indro Montanelli, in Porta Venezia per poi rifugiarsi al Gam, una galleria di Arte Moderna meravigliosa.

Sine Modus was born out of the friendship between Chiara and Manuela, and a shared passion for vintage in 2012. Last October they opened their store Sine Modus Milano in Via Pomponazzi 22. The turbans Sine Modus are entirely handmade with fabrics from vintage or second-hand exclusive fabrics: skirts, shirts, clothes processed to become these gorgeous hats. The turban is a sophisticated and elegant accessory that is reminiscent of the Hollywood stars in the 70s and remains a must in every woman’s wardrobe.

Where did your passion for vintage fashion come from?
Our passion dates back to our childhood, when we both went to flea markets in Campania, where you can find some wonderful pieces, hidden gems, treasures of fabric, just poking out of huge pile of clothings sold by street vendor. Everything started from the “American pieces” (as they call them in Southern Italy). Then of course we researched, we examined the subject, and we made research in specialty stores, often in London.

What inspires you most?
We are inspired by uniqueness, elegance and personality.

How to wear a turban
There is no rule to wear a turban, it is always perfect, at any time of the day, with any style. It is an easy to wear accessory, just wear it with nonchalance, and it will go the extra mile making the difference.

Where do you find the fabrics for your turbans?
Our turbans are handmade by us in our workshop here in Milan and we use materials deriving from vintage pieces. It happens very often that old skirts, dresses, blouses with wonderful fabrics and patterns, a little spoiled or outdated in style, are given a new life.

If you had unlimited space what are the things you would collect?
Manuela definitely hats, and I’d collect jewels.

A macramé sheath, a shearling, a Borsalino hat, a jewel, a Burberry trench coat.

What past or maybe lost habits do you feel most nostalgic about?
I miss waking up in the house where I was born, in Paestum, where my parents are still living, waking up there means having breakfast with them and then go for a walk by the sea, simple gestures, but they feel your heart. Manu: “Sunday lunch at her maternal grandmother.

Where did you get the idea for your shop in Milan?
It was the natural evolution of our work carried out over the last two years on the social media and on our website. We needed a lab and a physical place where you can interact personally with your customers, as the exchange of opinions and values in person gives added value to our work.

Favourite corner of your shop
It’s more than just a corner, it’s a wall realized in a way that seems ancient and where we wanted two baroque mirrors. It’s evocative and warm.

What is your dream of happiness?
We want to improve our project, to be able to communicate through a real concept our passion for art, literature, design as well as for fashion.

Take a walk through the Corso Como’s racks and displays, Galleria Carla Sozzani worths a visit (there are always striking photo exhibits), visit Spazio Oberdan is the location for screenings and initiatives of the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana, eating Sushi at Temaquino, go dancing at the Tunnel on Saturday night for “Le Cannibale” event, take a stroll through the Indro Montanelli Public Gardens, in Porta Venezia and then visit GAM, a wonderful Gallery of Modern Art.

Valentina ama i cavalli e la campagna. Dopo aver lavorato nel mondo della moda, ha lasciato tutto per realizzare il suo sogno:le grenier de vivi.

Se amate le borse che ricordano le vecchie cartelle da scuola, i tessuti retrò e apprezzate il made in Italy, non potrete non amare le grenier de vivi!

Perchè hai creato “le grenier de vivi”?
Era un piccolo sogno che ho sempre avuto,ma non sono mai riuscita a dedicarmici totalmente per via del lavoro e del tempo a disposizione e poi un anno fa ho deciso di cambiare vita, ho lasciato Moschino, mi sono trasferita in campagna, ho scelto di dedicarmi ai cavalli e al mio sogno e così è nato le grenier de vivi.

Cosa ti ha insegnato la tua esperienza professionale da Moschino?
Sicuramente la cura del dettaglio, mai lasciare nulla al caso e la leggerezza e il divertimento anche in giornate infinite.

Qual è l’evento che ti ha cambiato la vita?
Direi l’incontro con i cavalli, da lì è nato un amore che dura da tutta la vita e che mi ha “riportato”dopo diverse esperienza affrontate sulla mia vera strada.

Cosa collezioni?
Non ne ho mai fatta una…

Dove trovi i tessuti?
Ho dei fornitori con cui lavoro da anni, fin da quando ero da Moschino, con cui mi trovo benissimo e so che all’occorrenza possono farmi rovistare nei loro archivi in cui amo perdermi.

Cosa ti ispira?
Parto sempre dalla ricerca tessuti, dal tatto, le sensazioni che mi danno nel toccarli e da lì l’ispirazione a creare una storia.

Cosa ami dei cavalli?
La loro sensibilità sono degli animali pazzeschi,istintivi poco confidenti, ma quando riesci a conquistare la loro fiducia il legame che si crea è unico, è un vero e proprio rapporto di complicità. Sono animali da 6 tonnellate se decidono di fare quello che vogliono non puoi niente contro di loro e pensare che, solo con le sensazioni e i movimenti del tuo corpo, riesci a guidarli è unico è una fiducia che loro ripongono totalmente in te. Ti si affidano totalmente per questo diventa un binomio perché non sei certo tu che li comandi da sola ma è una complicità e un affidarsi quello che ti porta a montarli e, come con le persone, non è che perché sai stare in sella puoi cavalcare qualsiasi cavallo, se non c’è affiatamento te ne accorgi e diventa un lavoro meccanico che non ti porta a nulla.

Che cosa ha a che fare la moda con la natura, la campagna e i cavalli?
E’ una passione unita alla decisione di seguire la mia strada e vivere la mia vita come ho sempre voluto, è diventato tutto naturale.

Valentina loves horses and the countryside. After having worked in the fashion industry, she left everything behind to realize her dream: le grenier de vivi. Why did you start “le grenier de vivi”?
I always had this little dream, but I couldn’t devote myself entirely to it due to work and time constraints. Then one year ago I decided to change my life: I left Moschino and moved to the countryside; I chose to devote myself to horses and to my dream, and that’s how “le grenier de vivi” began.

Where can we buy your collections?

What did your previous job at Moschino teach you?
Definitely an attention to detail, never leave anything to chance, and to bring a sense of lightness and fun even to days that never seem to end.

What event changed your life?
I would say when I first set eyes on horses. This sparked a lifelong love which has always brought me back to my true path even after several different experiences.

What do you collect?
I’ve never really collected anything.

Where do you find your fabrics?
I’ve been working with my suppliers for years, ever since I worked at Moschino. I have a very good relationship with them and I know that if I need to they’ll let me rummage through their archives where I love getting lost.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I always start by looking at the fabrics and their feel: the feelings I get when I touch them and this inspires me to create a story.

What do you love about horses?
Their sensitivity, they are wild, instinctive and shy animals, but when you gain their trust you will establish a special bond with them, a really close relationship. They weigh over 6 tonnes and if they decide to do what they want you can’t do anything about it, the only way you can lead them is with the feelings and movements of your body: it’s a unique trust they place in you. They completely rely on you and this becomes a kind of symbiosis because you’re not sure whether you alone are in control of them. It’s more of a complicity and trust which brings you to ride them and, as with people, just because you are able to sit on a saddle it doesn’t mean that you can ride any horse. You will soon realise if you’re lacking an understanding and it will become mechanical work that will bring you nothing.

What does fashion have in common with nature, the countryside and horses?
It’s a passion of mine that I have combined with my decision to follow my own path and live my life as I always wanted – It has become quite natural.

Tell us about 5 vintage pieces in your wardrobe.
They all come from my mother’s wardrobe: a Valentino’s evening jacket in laminated fabric, a camel cashmere coat made by her tailor, a skirt and a top with flowers bought in a flea market in Paris, as well as a fuchsia jacket with shoulder pads straight out of the 80s!!

Give us 5 things to do in Milan
Drink a glass of wine at Cantine Isola in Via Paolo Sarpi, try the rigatoni in tomato sauce at Vecchio Porco in Via Messina, spend an afternoon at the Planetarium located in the gardens of Porta Venezia, take a stroll through deserted Milan in mid-August or treat yourself to a real pampering at Bahanma Mama in Via Col di Lana for the perfect manicure, where you can also buy something vintage from their selection.

Lazzari rappresenta esattamente tutto quello che vorrei nel mio guardaroba ora!

Ah, dimenticavo il delizioso cappotto con le stelline.

Ma il mio amore per questo brand è stato indubbiamente rafforzato dal video della campagna FW 14-15.

“Diana+Diana”, questo il titolo del video, è ambientato in uno scenario anni ’60, con atmosfere da campeggio come nel film Moonrise Kingdom di Wes Anderson, e due ragazze che ricordano le gemelle Sharon e Susan de “Il cowboy con il vestito da sposa”.

Insomma il risultato delizioso di un mix tra le tonalità vintage del cinema di Wes e i rassicuranti classici della Disney.

But my love for this brand has undoubtedly been strengthened by the Fall-Winter 2014-2015 video campaign.

“Diana + Diana,” this is the title of the video, is set in a Sixties scenario, with a summer camp atmosphere like the movie Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson, and two girls reminding us the twins Sharon and Susan in “The Parent Trap. “

Una delle cose più belle di avere un blog è la possibilità di conoscere persone interessanti.

Qualche tempo fa una ragazza ha lasciato qui un dolcissimo commento. Mi sono incuriosita, l’ho contattata e ho scoperto che è una di quelle ragazze in gamba, che tanto stimo!

Cristiana Crisafi è creatrice e sviluppatrice di blog di stile e collabora con diverse testate online che si occupano di moda e nuove tendenze.

Lavora per un nuovo brand genovese di occhiali artigianali ed è l’autrice del libro “Vintage! Caccia al tesoro nel cassetto della nonna”.

Io l’ho letto e ve lo consiglio vivamente. Un must per chi ama il vintage e la moda!

Per conoscere meglio Cristiana leggete le sue risposte alle mie domande.

Com’è nata la tua passione per la moda vintage?
La mia passione per il vintage deriva da mia madre. Il suo guardaroba non è molto vintage, ma é lei che mi ha insegnato l’amore per le belle cose, gli abiti ben rifiniti e il buon gusto. Con queste premesse è stato facile avvicinarsi al vintage, visto che gli abiti delle epoche passate sono maggiormente curati nei dettagli e nelle stoffe. Con ciò non dico che gli abiti attuali siano sempre cuciti sommariamente o che i tessuti non siano pregiati, solo si lavora meno a mano e maggiore é l’uso di materiali sintetici.

Il decennio della moda che preferisci
L’epoca che preferisco va dalla fine degli anni ’40 all’inizio degli anni ’60. La forma del mio corpo si avvicina di più ai tagli di quell’epoca anche se il mio armadio è pieno zeppo di abiti a trapezio degli anni ’60! Predico bene e razzolo male!

Come nasce l’idea del tuo libro?
L’idea del libro non è nata da me, anche se da sempre ho la passione per la scrittura. Grazie a una rubrica su magazine on line di moda e ad un blog che curavo, la casa editrice mi ha contattata chiedendomi se volevo scrivere un libro sul vintage. Ho ovviamente accettato ed è stata una bellissima esperienza, soprattutto perché ho conosciuto tante persone che come me sono amanti del vintage.

5 pezzi vintage nel tuo armadio
Un vestito a fiori anni ’50, un paio di pantaloncini Levi’s a vita alta, un paio di jeans a zampa di elefante anni ’70 rubati a mia mamma, un Borsalino nero e un vestito di seta terra di siena anni ’60!

Nel tuo libro ci inviti ad osare mixando capi, colori e stili. Quali sono, secondo te, gli errori da evitare?

Il primo errore da evitare e anche quello che mi fa più drizzare i capelli è l’esagerazione. Alcuni abiti vintage hanno bisogno di essere mixati con capi moderni, perché il rischio più grosso che si corre è quello di sembrare mascherati. Bisogna stare attenti a non mischiare insieme capi di epoche troppo diverse, come ad esempio vestirsi anni venti con scarpe anni ’80! Ma la cosa più importante da tenere a mente é che non si deve acquistare un capo solo perché é bello, ma bisogna sentircisi a proprio agio in ogni circostanza.

Cosa cerchi quando vai ai mercatini?
Quando vago per i mercatini il mio sguardo viene sempre catturato da borse e accessori. Forse perché non sono affatto rapida nell’acquisto di un abito, devo provarlo più e più volte, pensare con che scarpe abbinarlo e via dicendo. Invece per quanto riguarda le borse non ho limiti: ne ho tantissime! Un rapido consiglio per i mercatini: fate conoscenza con il venditore, vi troverete più a vostro agio nell’acquisto e vi darà ottimi consigli utilissimi!

Cosa collezioni?
Non sono un’amante delle collezioni, ma l’unica cosa amo avere sono le locandine di vecchie fiere o mostre. Soprattutto quelle francesi!

Di quali abitudini passate e forse perse senti di più la nostalgia?
Delle feste di paese dove tutti ballano e indossano il vestito buono. I pranzi della domenica dove partecipa tutta la famiglia. La radio. Il cinema all’aperto sotto le stelle. Le piccole botteghe e gli abiti sartoriali, ma spero che almeno per questi ultimi si possa porre rimedio!

La tua wishlist vintage
Sono anni che cerco una gonna a ruota rossa e un tubino nero che sia perfetto per il mio corpo. Vorrei trovare (utopia) una borsa Chanel compatibile con le mie tasche ma mi accontenterei anche di una Kelly di Hermés! In ultimo un bellissimo trattore blu vintage!

5 cose da fare a Genova
Quando vengono persone da fuori a trovarmi, la prima cosa che faccio fare loro solitamente é una passeggiata serale in spianata Castelletto per vedere tutta Genova dall’alto. Un giro nei vicoli il sabato mattina, quando si fanno le compere nelle botteghe storiche per il pranzo. Un buon aperitivo sulla palafitta dei bagni S. Chiara. Una chiacchierata vintage con Andrea, proprietario di Man and the City e Boccadasse, con la compagnia di un buon amico o di un buon libro.

My curiosity got the better of me, I contacted her and found out that she is the kind of smart girls I admire! Cristiana Crisafi is the creator and developer of fashion and style blogs and collaborates with several fashion websites. She works for a new brand of handcrafted eyewear and is the author of the book ““Vintage! Caccia al tesoro nel cassetto della nonna”. I read it and I strongly recommend it. Where did your passion for vintage fashion come from?
My passion for vintage fashion comes from my mother. Her wardrobe does not have many vintage items, but she was the one who taught me to love beautiful things, refined clothes and good taste. With this background, it was easy to get into vintage fashion, since more attention was paid to detail and fabric in clothes of yesteryear. By this, I don’t mean that modern clothes are all poorly sewn and that the textiles are low-quality, but that people work less by hand and more synthetic materials are being used.

What is your favourite decade for fashion?
My favourite fashion period runs from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. My body shape works best with the styles of that time, even though my closet is packed full of A-line dresses from the 60s! I don’t practice what I preach!

Where did you get the idea for your book?
I didn’t come up with the idea for the book, even though I have always had a passion for writing. Thanks to my column in an online fashion magazine and a blog that I used to write, the publisher contacted me and asked if I wanted to write a book about vintage styles. I obviously accepted and it was a great experience, especially because I met so many people like me, who love vintage styles.

Tell us about 5 vintage pieces in your closet.
A 1950s floral dress, a pair of Levi’s high-waisted denim shorts, a pair of 1970s flared jeans stolen from my mother, a black Borsalino and a 1960s silk dark sienna dress!

In your book you invite us to be daring and mix items, colours and styles. In your opinion, what are the mistakes to avoid?
The first mistake to avoid which sends shivers down my spine is overstatement. Some vintage clothes need to be mixed with modern garments, because the biggest risk we run is to look like we’re in disguise. But you should be careful not to mix items from eras that are too diverse, such as dresses from the 20s with shoes from the 80s! But the most important thing to bear in mind is that you should not buy an item just because it’s beautiful, but rather you have to feel comfortable with it in all aspects.

What do you look for when you go to street markets?
When I wander through street markets my eye is always caught by bags and accessories. Maybe because I’m not quick at all when I buy a dress, I have to try it on over and over again, thinking about what shoes go with it and so on. But I don’t have any limits when it comes to bags: I have so many! Here’s a quick tip when going to markets: get to know the sellers, you’ll be more comfortable when making a purchase and they’ll give you great pieces of useful advice!

What do you collect?
I don’t love collecting, but the one thing I love to have are posters of old fairs or exhibitions, especially the French ones!

What past or maybe lost habits do you feel most nostalgic about?
Village fairs where everyone dances and wears their best dress. Sunday lunches with the whole family. The radio. Open-air cinemas under the stars. Small shops and tailored clothes, but I hope we can at least remedy the latter!

What’s on your vintage wish list?
For many years now, I’ve been searching for a full red skirt and a little black dress that is perfect for my body. I would like to find (in a perfect world) a Chanel bag which is within my budget, but I’d settle for a Hermès Kelly bag! Finally, a beautiful vintage blue tractor!

Give us 5 things to do in Genoa.
When people come to visit me, the first thing I usually do is take them on an evening stroll at the Castelletto esplanade which overlooks Genoa. Then a walk down the side streets on Saturday morning, when you can go shopping for lunch in the historic shops, followed by a good aperitif on the stilt houses at the Santa Chiara baths. Or have a chat about vintage styles with Andrea, the owner of Man and the City and Boccadasse, enjoying the company of a good friend or a good book.

E’ una traduttrice, danzatrice e dalle sue mani nascono le stupende creazioni di Fulana Beltrana Sicrana.

Benedetta è una di quelle giovani donne che incarna alla perfezione il multitasking femminile e io la trovo irresistibile!

“L’idea di FULANA BELTRANA SICRANA è nata nella primavera del 2011 e il nome è la versione femminile dell’espressione portoghese “Fulano, Beltrano e Sicrano” e il suo equivalente in altre lingue sarebbe “Tizia, Caia e Sempronia“, “Jane, Jill and Mary”“,” Pierrette, Paulette et Jacqueline “,” Fulana, Zultana y Mengana“,” Jasia, Julka i Marysia “,” Λόλα, Φαίη και Μιμή (Lola, Fay e Mimi) “… Diversamente dall‘uso comune dell’espressione, le bambole sono facilmente riconoscibili – Fulanas e Fulanos hanno i capelli scuri, Beltranas e Beltranos hanno i capelli rossi e Sicranas e Sicranos hanno i capelli castani e ognuno ha una personalità unica e speciale”.

Sei danzatrice, traduttrice e creatrice di Fulana Beltrana Sicrana. Come coesistono in te questi tre mondi?

Da freelancer, sono sempre stata abituata all’idea di progetto, scadenza, ricerca, idee, disciplina, multi-tasking… e diciamo che sono questi gli aspetti che hanno in comune queste tre attività, ovviamente con le dovute sfumature. Da un punto di vista pratico, svolgendo varie professioni, si è aggiunta un’altra parola importante alla lista, “priorità”. E non mi riferisco ad una piccola traduzione, a poche ore di prove o alla creazione di un prodotto, perchè ciò avviene molto spesso, ma mi riferisco soprattutto alla realizzazione contemporanea di progetti molto impegnativi, come affrontare le prove per un nuovo spettacolo, una traduzione molto complessa o creare una collezione o uno stock di prodotti. Ognuno di questi momenti richiede molte ore di lavoro e di concentrazione, e quindi ciò mi obbliga a dover dare priorità al lavoro più urgente e, di conseguenza, a dover, spesso, rinunciare agli altri. Diciamo, comunque, che in generale riesco sempre a gestire il tutto, ovviamente spesso grazie alle nottate e ai fine settimana che, come ben sai, fanno parte dell’agenda di un lavoratore indipendente.

Fulana Beltrana Sicrana nasce da un taccuino nella primavera 2011. Cos’è diventato oggi?

In quel taccuino c’era un’ idea, un progetto che pian piano ha preso forma e che ora, grazie a tutti coloro che ci hanno creduto e che ci stanno credendo come me, è non solo una marca registrata, ma anche e soprattutto ciò che più desideravo, ovvero qualcosa di speciale che le persone vogliono avere o regalare. ‘Fulana Beltrana Sicrana’ è in vendita, oltre che in Portogallo, paese in cui vivo e lavoro, anche in Germania, Olanda, Australia, Giappone, Canada e Nuova Zelanda e si trova in molte case in Europa e in varie parti del mondo.

Dove trovi ispirazione per le tue creazioni?

Da un punto di vista di stile, una grande ispirazione é sempre stata la musica e la moda degli anni ’60 e’70 e, di conseguenza, anche tutte le nuove tendenze che si rifanno a questi anni.

Ora come ora, mi ispiro molto anche ai personaggi di film e a stili di vita che ammiro e con i quali mi identifico, come le Pussy Riot, il Capitano Zissou, ispirato al protagonista del film di Wes Anderson ‘Le Avventure acquatiche di Steve Zissou’ e la collezione ‘Backpackers’, dalla quale nasceranno in breve altre collezioni dello stesso genere.

Da un punto di vista di materiali, il mio obbiettivo è sempre stato quello di riutilizzare e dare nuova vita a tessuti riciclati o vintage che, da anni ormai, colleziono e che appartenevo alle mie nonne, bisnonne e alle mie zie e ora anche alle nonne e alle zie di amici e di persone che danno valore e che credono in questa filosofia di vita .

Quindi, quando creo le mie collezioni o bambole personalizzate sono spesso anche i tessuti e i materiali disponibili a servire d’ispirazione.

Come sei diventata traduttrice e con quali lingue lavori?

Diciamo che la traduzione è sempre stata, indirettamente, presente come sopravvivenza e poi è diventata, per scelta, una professione.

Ho sempre avuto la fortuna di viaggiare e sin dal liceo ho scelto di specializzarmi in lingue. Nel 2001 mi sono trasferita in Olanda per frequentare l’accademia di danza di Rotterdam e nel 2003 mi sono trasferita in Portogallo, a Lisbona, dove ho potuto finire l’università e dove mi sono specializzata in traduzione.

Lavoro con l’italiano, il portoghese e l’inglese e le mie aree di specializzazione sono l’Architettura, il Design e le Arti dello Spettacolo.

Esiste un legame tra la creatività e il mondo della traduzione?

Senza dubbio. Saper interpretare e trasmettere un messaggio o un significato sia in un’altra lingua sia attraverso l’oggetto realizzato.

5 cose da fare a Lisbona

A parte tutto quello che normalmente si trova nelle guide, e i mille altri posti che vale la pena visitare, posso suggerire un itinerario alternativo, che faccio sempre quando qualcuno mi viene a trovare: pranzo ‘almoço’ alla ‘A Palmeira’, nella ‘baixa’, visitare la chiesa di ‘São Domingos’, vicino al Rossio e, perchè no, bere una ‘ginjinha’, visitare la ‘Casa do Alentejo’ e l’‘Ateneu’, proseguire verso l’‘elevador da Lavra’, prenderlo oppure salire a piedi fino al ‘Jardim do Torel’.

Il tuo sogno di felicità

Sicuramente, in ambito professionale, il mio obbiettivo è di riuscire a portare avanti e di far crescere i miei progetti senza dover abdicare a ciò in cui credo.

Benedetta Maxia is a talented Italian girl who lives in Lisbon. She is a translator, a professional contemporary dancer and with her gifted hands a she creates the stunning Fulana Beltrana Sicrana art dolls. “The idea of FULANA BELTRANA SICRANA started in the spring of 2011 and the name is the feminine version of the Portuguese expression “Fulano, Beltrano e Sicrano” and its equivalent in others languages would be “Tizia, Caia e Sempronia”, “Jane, Jill and Mary”, “Pierrette, Paulette et Jacqueline”, “Fulana, Zultana y Mengana”, “Jasia, Julka i Marysia”, “Λόλα, Φαίη και Μιμή (Lola, Fay and Mimi)”…Unlike the common use of the expression, the dolls are easily recognizable – Fulanas and Fulanos have dark hair, Beltranas and Beltranos have red hair and Sicranas and Sicranos have brown hair and each one has a unique and special personality”.

You are a contemporary dancer, a translator and the creator of Fulana Beltrana Sicrana. How do these three worlds coexist for you?

As a freelancer, I’ve always been used to the idea of the project: deadlines, research, ideas, discipline, multi-tasking, etc, and I can say that this is what these three activities have in common, but of course with the proper nuances. From a practical point of view, when carrying out various professions, it is important to add another word to the list: “priority”. And I’m not referring to a small translation, a few hours practice or the creation of a product, because this happens very often, but I am referring in particular to carrying out challenging projects simultaneously; how to deal with practice for a new show, a very complex translation or create a collection or a stock of products. Each of these jobs requires many hours of work and concentration, and it therefore forces me to prioritize the most urgent work and, consequently, I often have to turn down others. Let’s say, however, that in general I can always manage it all, of course, often due to late nights and weekends which, as you well know, are part of the life of a freelancer.

Fulana Beltrana Sicrana was created from a notebook in the spring of 2011. What has it become today?

In that notebook there was an idea, a project that slowly took shape and now, thanks to all those who have believed and still believe in it as I do, it is not only a registered trade mark, but also what I wanted most, which is something special that people want to have or give as gifts. ‘Fulana Beltrana Sicrana’ is on sale in Portugal, the country where I live and work, but also in Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Canada and New Zealand and they can be found in many homes in Europe and around the world.

Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

From a style point of view, music and fashion from the 60s and 70s have always been a great source of inspiration and, consequently, all the new trends are based on these years. Right now, I’m also very inspired by the characters of the films and lifestyles I admire and with whom I identify, such as Pussy Riot, Captain Zissou (inspired by the main character of Wes Anderson’s ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’) and the ‘Backpackers’ collection, which will soon give rise to other similar collections. From a material point of view, my goal has always been to reuse and give new life to vintage or recycled fabrics, which I’ve been collecting for years now and used to belong to my grandmothers, great-grandmothers and aunts but now also from grandmothers and aunts of friends and other people who value and believe in this philosophy. So, when I create my collections or custom dolls, it is often the fabrics and materials available which serve as inspiration.

How did you become a translator and which languages do you work in?

Let’s say that translation has always been, indirectly, a means of survival and this later became, by choice, a profession. I’ve always been lucky enough to travel and since high school I’ve chosen to specialize in languages. In 2001, I moved to the Netherlands to attend the dance academy in Rotterdam and in 2003 I moved to Portugal, to Lisbon, where I was able to finish the university and where I specialized in translation.

My working languages are Italian, Portuguese and English, and my areas of expertise are architecture, design and the performing arts.

Is there a link between creativity and the world of translation?

No doubt. Knowing how to interpret and convey a message or a meaning, either in another language or through a created object.

Aside from everything you normally find in guidebooks, and the thousands of other places worth visiting, I can suggest an alternative itinerary, which I always do when someone comes to visit me: an ‘almoço’ lunch at ‘A Palmeira’ in the ‘baixa’, then visit the ‘São Domingos’ church near to Rossio, and maybe drink a ‘ginjinha’, then go to ‘Casa do Alentejo’ and the ‘Ateneu’, before continuing on to the ‘elevador da Lavra’, which you can take or just walk up to the ‘Jardim do Torel’.

What is your dream of happiness?

In the professional world, my goal is definitely to be able to pursue and develop my projects without having to sacrifice anything I believe in.

Anatomy of Halcyon Fair

How was the idea behind Halcyon Fair born?
I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of a time when things were better, even when we know every era had its problems. Halcyon days are painted in one’s mind with a more colorful brush than reality, nostalgia kindles memories of the best of times and lets the worst of times fade. For me, dressing oneself is a daily opportunity one can take to express how they wish their lives to be, and that affects how our lives are lived and remembered.

I had a recurring dream as a child where I went to the local fair on my plastic tricycle (I was very young), and it glistened with string lights, an old hand carved merry-go-round, pastel colored candies and sweets, and lovely, caring people befriending me. The dream was so real, and it continues to evolve in my mind with each retelling, truly embodying the idea of a better time that existed in the past and not at all. That’s where the name Halcyon Fair comes from.

How did you first get interested in vintage fashion?
I love high quality things that aren’t mass produced. So it just makes sense in today’s world of disposable fast fashion. I couldn’t tell you how the interest began, but I can tell you that it was always there and has just blossomed in the last year and a half or so.

What do you look for when you go to flea markets?
Whatever catches my eye in terms of quality or design. I have no rules and try to keep an open mind. I am usually drawn to art deco and midcentury styles, so you could say I like structure and geometric shapes as well as sleek design. I can’t tell you my shopping methods. They’re secret!

What do you collect?
I wouldn’t say I collect them, because one can only have so many lamps in a house. But every time I go vintage hunting, I find a lamp or light fixture to fall in love with!

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m not sure. It varies all the time, so perhaps I would call it eclectic? Although that word makes me think of someone that’s into new age music and gardening, which I am not. And believe it or not, I consign clothes often, so my personal wardrobe is fairly limited. I would say my style is mostly classic, sometimes retro, almost never boho.

I don’t believe in must-have items. Buy what you love and wear it all!

Your favourite old movie
That’s a hard one! Probably Philadelphia Story. Cary Grant was brilliant. Katharine Hepburn is one of my idols.

What inspires you the most?
I love vintage travel posters from the golden age of travel. There is a whole world of dressing that could revolve around the feelings they evoke.

Your dream of happiness
Traveling the world, meeting interesting people, doing interesting work, and looking fabulous doing it.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I’d love to be based in New York, traveling the world, meeting interesting people, doing interesting work, and looking fabulous doing it. But I can look quite haggard when I travel and work alot, not to mention over a NYC winter!

Com’è nata l’idea di Halcyon Fair?
Sono sempre stata affascinata dall’idea di un tempo in cui le cose andavano meglio , anche se sappiamo che ogni epoca ha avuto i suoi problemi. I giorni felici sono dipinti nella nostra mente con un pennello più colorato della realtà, la nostalgia accende ricordi di tempi migliori e lascia il peggio di ogni epoca svanire . Per me vestirsi è un’opportunità quotidiana che abbiamo per esprimere come vorremmo fosse la nostra vita, e ciò influisce sul nostro modo di vivere e su come verremo ricordati.

Da bambina facevo un sogno ricorrente in cui andavo alla fiera locale sul mio triciclo di plastica (ero molto piccola), tutto luccicava con file di luci, una vecchia giostra scolpita a mano, caramelle e dolciumi color pastello, e c’erano persone squisite, premurose e amichevoli con me. Il sogno era così reale, e continua ad evolversi nella mia mente ogni volta che lo racconto. Incarna l’idea di un tempo migliore che esisteva nel passato, ma che in realtà non era per niente così. Ecco da dove viene il nome Halcyon Fair (la fiera dei giorni felici).

Com’è iniziato il tuo interesse per la moda vintage?
Amo le cose di qualità che non vengono prodotte in serie. .E questo ha un senso nel mondo odierno, caratterizzato dalla moda usa e getta. Non so dire come sia iniziato il mio interesse, ma posso dirti che era sempre lì e si è manifestato nel corso dell’ultimo anno e mezzo o giù di lì.

Cosa cerchi quando vai ai mercatini?

Qualsiasi cosa attiri la mia attenzione in termini di qualità e di design. Non ho regole e cerco di mantenere una mente aperta. Di solito sono attratta dagli stili art deco e mid-century, perciò si può dire che mi piacciono le strutture, le forme geometriche e il design elegante. Non posso svelarvi i miei metodi di acquisto. Sono un segreto!

Cosa collezioni?
Non direi che le colleziono, perché si possono avere tante lampade in casa. Ma ogni volta che vado a caccia di vintage, trovo sempre una lampada o un apparecchio di illuminazione di cui innamorami!

Come descriveresti il tuo stile personale?
Non ne sono sicura. Cambia continuamente, quindi forse dovrei definirlo eclettico? Anche se questa parola mi fa pensare a qualcuno appassionato di musica new age e giardinaggio, cosa che io non sono. E che ci crediate o no, spedisco spesso vestiti, quindi il mio guardaroba personale è piuttosto limitato. Direi che il mio stile è prevalentemente classico, a volte retrò, quasi mai boho.

Io non credo nei pezzi must-have. Acquistate ciò che vi piace e indossate tutto!

Vecchio film preferito
Domanda difficile! Forse Scandalo a Filadelfia. Cary Grant era strepitoso e Katharine Hepburn è una dei miei idoli.

Cosa ti ispira di più?
Amo i poster dell’età dell’oro dei viaggi. C’è tutto un mondo del vestire che potrebbe ruotare intorno alle sensazioni che evocano.

Il tuo sogno di felicità
Viaggiare per il mondo, incontrare persone interessanti, fare un lavoro interessante, e farlo avendo un aspetto favoloso.

Dove ti vedi tra cinque anni?
Mi piacerebbe vivere a New York, girare il mondo, incontrare persone stimolanti, avere un lavoro interessante, ed essere tremendamente favolosa nel fare tutto questo. Ma quando viaggio e lavoro molto posso avere un aspetto abbastanza disfatto, per non parlare dell’inverno a New York!

Com’è nata “la tazzina blu“?
La tazzina blu è nata tre anni fa dall’urgenza di collezionare immagini d’interni… Sono sempre stata una fanatica delle collezioni, e dopo aver creato il mio archivio “cartaceo” di riviste, ho deciso di crearne uno sul web in modo da poter condividere (e commentare) i miei colpi di fulmine con altre persone appassionate d’interior come me.

Cosa collezioni?
Colleziono riviste d’arredamento e sono abbastanza ossessiva nell’atto dell’archiviazione… Mi piace vederle tutte “schierate” in ordine cronologico nei loro raccoglitori. Se scoppiasse un incendio credo che sarebbero la prima cosa che metterei in salvo 🙂

La tua ossessione attuale ( in termini di interior design ecc.)
Ultimamente mi sento molto attratta dal lavoro dei nuovi designer olandesi , bravissimi ad unire l’estetica minimal del nord al loro gusto eclettico combinando improbabili colori fluo al legno chiaro o al bianco.

La tua palette di colori del momento
La palette di colori che mi rispecchia di più attualmente è sui toni neutri della terra, mescolati ai grigi. Ma devo ancora capire qual è il colore che mi fa sentire più a mio agio…

Che cosa ti ispira?
Questa è una domandona… Traggo ispirazione da molte cose, molto spesso intravedo il bello anche dove non penseresti mai di trovarlo, e cerco di trarre spunti un po’ da tutto ciò che mi circonda. Già scrivere sul blog è un esercizio di creatività molto importante, come se fosse un circolo vizioso. Più scrivo e più mi sento ispirata…Se mi fermo è la fine. Sono molto concentrata su tutto ciò che fa “arredo”, ma ammetto di trovare ottimi spunti anche nella moda e nell’arte.

Stai ristrutturando il tuo appartamento. Quali sono gli errori da evitare in una ristrutturazione?

Un erroraccio è quello di dare troppo retta alle tendenze del momento, o di progettare la casa a misura di “rivista”. Prima di tutto bisogna ascoltare se stessi e focalizzarsi bene sui propri bisogni. Nella vita può capitare di ristrutturare la propria casa una, o al massimo due volte, non dobbiamo perdere l’occasione di creare qualcosa a nostra misura.

Quale stanza preferisci progettare e arredare?
Questa domanda è la più difficile di tutte… Mi piacciono tutti gli spazi domestici e non c’è una stanza in particolare che preferisco rispetto alle altre.
Direi la camera da letto ma mi sono resa conto che, pur sembrando semplice da progettare, è la stanza che mi ha messo più in crisi nella fase progettuale della mia ristrutturazione… Ok, dico camera da letto.

Qual è la tua scenografia cinematografica preferita? Di quale film?
Pur non essendo una grande fan dei film in costume, ho adorato com’è stato curato ogni minimo dettaglio nel film Marie Antoinette di Sofia Coppola… Versailles con i suoi stucchi dorati rococò e le tappezzerie rosa sembrava un enorme cupcake.

5 cose da fare a Padova
1. Fare un giro tra le bancarelle di frutta e verdura di Piazza delle Erbe (possibilmente di mattina) e magari comprarci delle fragole.
2. Perdersi di sera nei vicoli del ghetto ebraico, con un bicchiere di vino in mano dopo aver mangiato in qualche osteria tipica
3. Snobbare tutti gli splendidi musei per cercare e toccare tutte le opere street art di KennyRandom sparpagliate per la città
4. In primavera, se è una bella giornata, passare qualche ora all’orto botanico. Se invece piove consiglio di visitare i musei snobbati al punto 3
5. Sempre se si tratta di una bella giornata, affittare una barca per fare il tour del fiume che circonda Padova. Il massimo sarebbe far guidare la barca ad un amico mentre ci si mangia le fragole comprate al mercato di Piazza delle Erbe.

Posso aggiungere una sesta cosa? Mangiare la pizza da Orsucci… Il posto è un buco ma la pizza è speciale… Buonissima! E’ più piccola di una pizza normale e te la servono su un foglio di carta.

Cosa fai quando non scrivi sul tuo blog?
Quando non scrivo sul blog cerco di concentrarmi sul progetto che sto preparando per l’esame del corso di arredamento d’interni che sto frequentando… Devo consegnarlo i primi di maggio, poi sarò ufficialmente una progettista d’interni 
Inoltre sono coinvolta in una sorta di “Factory” tutta la femminile… Si chiama Cipria. Organizziamo eventi a tema nei club ed ognuna di noi ha un preciso compito, il mio è quello di allestire e scrivere sul blog. (cipria.org)

Qual è il migliore consiglio che hai ricevuto?
Il miglior consiglio che abbia mai ricevuto me l’ha dato l’architetto (una donna con cui sono molto in sintonia) che mi sta aiutando a ristrutturare casa… All’inizio la mia idea era quella di rivoluzionare il meno possibile l’appartamento (nonostante fosse proprio poco funzionale) perché ero sicura che magari in un secondo tempo avrei fatto una seconda ristrutturazione più radicale. Ma lei mi ha fatto capire che ristrutturare una volta per tutte ed in modo “definitivo” sarebbe stata l’opzione migliore, nonostante l’aumento sostanziale delle tempistiche e delle spese. Adesso sono molto soddisfatta di questa scelta coraggiosa che ho fatto.

Where did you get the idea for “la tazzina blu”?
La tazzina blu was created three years ago because I urgently needed to collect interior design photos… I’ve always been a fan of collecting, and after having created my “paper” archive of magazines, I decided to create one on the web where I could share (and talk about) the things I love with people who share my enthusiasm and interest for interior design.

What do you collect?
I collect interior design magazines and I’m quite obsessed with archiving… I like to see all of them “lined up” in chronological order in their binders. If a fire broke out, I think they’d be the first thing I’d save!

What’s your current interior design obsession?
Lately, I have been particularly drawn to the work of new Dutch designers. They are great at combining North European aesthetic minimalism with their eclectic style, combining unusual fluorescent colours with with light-coloured or white wood.
In the next life I’d love to come back as an object designed by Scholten & Baijings, who are my favourite pair of designers at the moment. http://www.scholtenbaijings.com

What’s your current colour palette?
The current colour palette that best reflects my taste is in natural earth tones mixed with shades of grey. But I have yet to find which colour makes me feel most at home…

What inspires you most?
That’s a big question; I get inspired by all sorts of things. I often see beauty where you’d never think to find it, and I try to draw inspiration from the things going on around me. Writing a blog is a very important creative exercise for me. It’s kind of a vicious cycle: the more I write, the more I feel inspired…If I stop it will be the end. I am very focused on everything about interior design, but I admit I love finding great ideas in fashion and art.

You’re currently renovating your apartment. What are the mistakes to avoid when renovating?
One big mistake is paying too much attention to current trends, or designing your home based on interior design magazines. First of all, you need to listen to yourself and focus on your own needs. You’re likely to renovate once or twice in your lifetime and you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to create something personal and unique.

What’s your favourite room to design and decorate?
That’s the hardest question to answer…I like all domestic spaces and there isn’t one room in particular that I prefer more than others.
I would say the bedroom but I realised that, even though it seems easy to design, it’s the room that caused me most trouble when planning my renovation… Ok, I’ll say the bedroom.

What’s your favourite movie set?
While I’m not a big fan of costume dramas, I loved the attention to every tiny detail in Sofia Coppola’s film “Marie Antoinette”; with its Rococo gilded stucco works and pink upholstery Versailles looked like a huge cupcake.

5 Things to do in Padua
1. Go for a walk around the fruit and vegetable stands in Piazza delle Erbe (possibly in the morning) and maybe even buy some strawberries.
2. Spend an evening getting lost around the streets of the Jewish ghetto , with a glass of wine in hand after having eaten at a typical osteria.
3. Shun all the wonderful museums to go find and discover all the street art by KennyRandom dotted around the city.
4. On a beautiful spring day, spend a few hours at the botanical garden. If it’s raining, I recommend visiting the museums you previously avoided.
5. Once again, if it’s a beautiful day, rent a boat and take a tour along the river around Padua. The best option would be to let a friend steer the boat while you eat the strawberries you previously bought at the Piazza delle Erbe market.

May I add a sixth thing? Eating pizza at Orsucci …The place is a dive but the pizza is special, really delicious! It’s smaller than a normal pizza and they serve it on a sheet of paper.

What do you do when you are not writing your blog?
When I’m not writing my blog, I try to focus on the project I’m preparing for the final exam of the interior design course I’m taking. I have to hand it in at the beginning of May, and then I’ll officially be an interior designer 
I’m also involved in a sort of female “Factory”: it’s called Cipria. We organise themed events in clubs and each of us has specific tasks to perform. I organise and write blog posts (cipria.org).

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
The best advice I’ve been given came from my architect (I’m very in tune with her) who is helping me to renovate my home: at first my idea was to alter the apartment as little as possible (even though it was not really practical) because I was sure that I’d have to make a second, more radical renovation at a later date. But she helped me to understand that the best option was to renovate it all in one “final” go, despite the substantial increase in timing and costs. Now I am really happy with the bold choice I made.
